Texas Red Oak

Height: 30 - 75 ft
Spread: 25 - 50 ft
A native of Central Texas on alkaline and slightly acidic soil, Texas Red Oak grows well in full sun on a wide variety of soils. The foliage turns bright shades of vivid red and orange in autumn. The bark is dark gray to black with platelike scales, although sometimes it is light gray and smooth. While it prefers moist, rich soil where it will grow rapidly, it will also tolerate drier locations. It is found on alkaline limestone and neutral to slightly acid gravels and sands of north central and central Texas west to the Pecos River. It is highly stress-tolerant and will endure urban conditions quite well, including high pH soil. It appears to be well-adapted to clay soil, even those which are poorly drained.
It can be affected by Oak wilt, a fatal disease beginning with a slight crinkling and paling of the leaves. The disease may be spread by insects or pruning tools. Oak wilt appears to infect Red, Black and Live Oaks particularly. Avoid pruning in late spring and early summer in areas where Oak wilt is present. Dormant or summer pruning is best.
